The New Yorker: Can Pickleball Save America?
As in politics, a few famous families dominate pickleball, the fastest-growing sport in America. One is the Johnsons, of Florida. In January, on a breezy afternoon in Boca Raton, J. W. Johnson, a strapping nineteen-year-old with short brown bangs and a leather necklace, took to the court for a semifinal match at a tournament. Johnson is taciturn, with an often impenetrable expression.
He was seeded second in the tournament; his opponent, Zane Navratil, a twenty-six-year-old former C.P.A. from Wisconsin, was seeded first. Pickleball, a tennis-like sport played on a smaller court, places a gentle strain on the body, and both men had the oxygenated flush of a long day of exercise.
They began by dinking—softly bouncing the ball back and forth—before Navratil, with gazelle-like grace, executed two snazzy moves at once: an Erne (which involved a flying leap) and a body shot (which involved hitting Johnson in the gut). He chuckled with contentment. Then, as a storm front moved in, the tide began to turn. “Wow, what an inside-out dink there from J. W. Johnson!” a commentator at a nearby media booth said. Johnson, jaw slack with concentration, took control. (Read More)

- Pickler Recap
"JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier continued their undefeated streak for the third pickleball tournament in a row. Johnson and Frazier (the #1 seed) have not only won gold for three straight pickleball tournaments, but have not lost a single game in three straight pickleball tournaments. Like the women’s doubles champions, Bright and Todd, Johnson and Frazier limited their points given up to just 28 points in the eight games that they played (an average of 3.5 points per game—which was even more impressive than Bright and Todd), including a dominant gold medal match win of 11-3, 11-2."
"JW Johnson, paired with his younger sister and Rising Star Award recipient, Jorja Johnson, continued JW Johnson’s winning streak up until the winners’ bracket final. The Johnson siblings (the #1 seed) dropped the first game (which would be JW’s only game lost on the weekend), but came back to win the match in three games against the #2 seed, Lauren Stratman and Julian Arnold."
In summary, JW Johnson secured the triple crown, which is no easy feat. With a triple crown on the line for JW, pressure can certainly creep into play, but not for Jorja Johnson, who noted that she felt no pressure helping her brother secure the triple crown because “at the end of the day, [JW] is still my brother.”
